Employment - International Comparison

The availability of information regarding the number of employees in agriculture in Europe is very poor. This is a result of differences in the statistical methods in individual institutions and of differentiation between various groups of employees. For example seasonal workers are often not recorded as agricultural employees at all, or there is no differentiation between sectors such as horticulture and agriculture.

Employers: Number of companies that employ workers with mandatory welfare insurance.

Employees: Full-time employees are those employees who are employed by the company for the major part of the year (8 months or longer). Seasonal workers (precarious) are those employees who are employed for less than 8 months. As far as known the text also includes a differentiation of social and national groups.

The delineation of the notion 'agriculture' varies widely. As a first step we captured the sectors agriculture, horticulture and rural forestry and explained them in the text as far as possible. Employees in agricultural services are not taken into account in the Table.

The data on Employers are from: GEOPA: Seasonal workers in agriculture in Europe, June 2002.
